BJP secures historic victory with 207 seats; swearing-in ceremony scheduled at Brigade Parade Ground

Kolkata, 08 May (H.S.): Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday evening met Governor R. N. Ravi at Raj Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal.

Adhikari was accompanied by senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy during the meeting with the Governor.

The move came shortly after Adhikari was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party during a meeting held in Kolkata under the supervision of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP registered a historic and sweeping victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, was reduced to 80 seats.

With the massive mandate, the BJP is set to form its first government in the state, marking a major political shift in West Bengal’s electoral history.

Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, and nearly 20 chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the grand swearing-in ceremony.

The BJP leadership described the victory as a decisive mandate for political change and development in the state.
