New Delhi: Kulwinder Kaur, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable, has been suspended and arrested following an alleged altercation with Bollywood actress and newly-elected BJP MP Kangana Ranaut at Chandigarh Airport. The incident, which has sparked significant controversy, resulted in Kaur being charged under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The altercation reportedly stemmed from previous comments made by Ranaut during the 2020 farmers’ protests. In a video posted on her social media account, Ranaut described being “hit on the face and abused” by Kaur. “I am safe but concerned about terrorism in Punjab,” she stated in the video, expressing her concerns regarding the rise of violence in the state.

Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar condemned the incident, emphasizing that “any form of violence as a means to express dissent is unacceptable and needs condemnation.”

In response to the incident, several farmer unions, including the SKM (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, voiced their support for Kaur. They alleged that Ranaut had referred to Kaur as “Khalistan Kaur,” a term with significant political and cultural implications.

Kaur, who has been stationed at the airport for over two years, expressed her frustration over Ranaut’s past statements. She recounted how Ranaut’s remarks about farmers protesting for ₹100 and referring to them as “Khalistanis” had deeply affected her. “She made a statement that the farmers were sitting in protest for ₹100. Will she go and sit there? My mother was sitting there and protesting when she made this statement,” Kaur explained.

The CISF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vinay Kajla commented on the matter, describing Kaur’s actions as an “emotional outburst.” He added that she was remorseful about the incident and noted that her husband, also in the CISF, serves with the dog squad.

The background to this incident lies in the heated farmers’ protests against the three farm laws passed by the central government. During these protests, Ranaut had made several controversial remarks on social media, questioning the legitimacy of the protestors and labeling them as “terrorists.” These statements had ignited widespread backlash, leading to heightened tensions between Ranaut and the protestors.

As investigations continue, the incident has highlighted the ongoing sensitivities and divisions related to the farmers’ protests and the broader political landscape in India.
