Experienced CI/CT officer to lead Srinagar-based Chinar Corps overseeing LoC and Valley security

Jammu, April 28 (H.S.): Lieutenant General Balbir Singh has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the strategically significant 15 Corps, also known as the Chinar Corps, and is set to assume charge on May 1.

Headquartered in Srinagar, the 15 Corps is responsible for guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and managing internal security operations across the Valley.

Lt Gen Balbir Singh, currently serving as Major General General Staff (MGGS) at Northern Command, brings extensive experience in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Following his elevation, he has been assigned to lead the Corps at a crucial time when efforts to maintain stability in the region remain a priority.

An alumnus of the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, he has held several key operational roles during his career. Early in his service, he was posted at the 8 Sector headquarters in Lolab, Kupwara, where he was actively involved in planning and executing operations. He later commanded 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles during 2018–19, playing a vital role in counter-insurgency operations.

In 2023, he served as General Officer Commanding of Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) Victor, based in Awantipora, overseeing operations in south Kashmir and coordinating closely with other security formations.

Leadership Transition

Lt Gen Balbir Singh will succeed Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava of the Parachute Regiment, who had taken charge as GOC 15 Corps on October 5, 2024. During his tenure, Srivastava oversaw key security operations, including Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, the latter conducted jointly with Jammu & Kashmir Police and CRPF.

Lt Gen Srivastava has now been appointed as Quarter Master General (QMG) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi, in line with the Army’s rotational command policy.

The new appointment is expected to further strengthen operational preparedness and coordination among security forces in the region.
