According to officials, the liquor was being transported from Tezpur to Nagaland and was hidden inside a truck to avoid detection. The consignment had been concealed among cement sacks loaded from Balipara in Tezpur.

Interception Based on Intelligence

Acting on specific inputs, a team from Merapani Police intercepted the vehicle and carried out a search operation. During inspection, they recovered multiple cartons of liquor of different brands concealed within the cargo.

The truck, bearing registration number AS01 CC 2143, was seized as part of the operation.

Arrests and Investigation

The driver, identified as Lalit Singh from Manipur, and the handyman, Prem Kumar, were taken into custody at the spot. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

Officials said efforts are ongoing to determine whether a larger network is involved in the smuggling operation and to trace the origin and intended distribution of the seized liquor.

Context

Border areas like Merapani often witness such seizures due to differences in state-level regulations on alcohol, which can lead to illegal transportation and trade across state lines. Authorities have intensified surveillance in these regions to curb such activities.(With inputs from H.S.)
