Authorities likely to scale down celebrations, fireworks display may be dropped following fatal explosion
Thrissur, April 23: A key decision on conducting this year’s Thrissur Pooram is expected on Thursday, as authorities hold a high-level meeting in the aftermath of the deadly Mundathikkode explosion.
The meeting, scheduled at the Thrissur Collectorate, will be attended by state ministers, district officials, and representatives of the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswoms, the two प्रमुख temple bodies associated with the festival.
Fireworks Under Review
Both devaswoms have indicated a preference for holding the festival without fireworks this year, citing safety concerns after the recent tragedy. Instead, they have proposed limiting celebrations to traditional rituals, including the iconic ‘kudamattam’ ceremony, where decorated umbrellas are exchanged.
The final decision will be taken after consultations between the government and stakeholders.
Tragedy Casts Shadow
The deliberations follow a powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikkode, where materials for the festival were being prepared. The incident claimed 14 lives and left several others injured, many of whom are currently undergoing treatment.
Balancing Tradition and Safety
The Thiruvambady Devaswom has suggested observing a mourning period until April 24, after which the festival could proceed in a subdued manner. The Paramekkavu Devaswom has stated it will abide by the collective decision taken during the meeting.
Thrissur Pooram is one of Kerala’s most prominent cultural and religious festivals, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists each year. Authorities now face the challenge of balancing public safety with cultural sentiments, as preparations for the event had been underway for months.
A final decision is expected following Thursday’s meeting.
