Melbourne Renegades Coach Simon Helmot Steps Down After Five-Year Stint

WBBL-winning coach exits to explore new opportunities; leaves behind strong legacy

Melbourne, May 1 (H.S.): Melbourne Renegades head coach Simon Helmot has stepped down from his role after a five-year tenure, marking a significant change for the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) franchise.

The 54-year-old, who took charge in 2021, has decided to move on in pursuit of new opportunities. Helmot made an immediate impact in his debut season, guiding the Renegades to a runners-up finish.

His most notable achievement came during the 10th season of the WBBL, when he led the team to its maiden title. His strategic approach, combined with captain Sophie Molineux’s leadership, played a key role in the championship-winning campaign.

Coaching Journey

Helmot has had a long association with the Renegades, dating back to the inception of the Big Bash League, where he also served as the inaugural coach of the men’s team for four years.

During his tenure with the women’s side, the team recorded mixed results:

  • WBBL 07: Runners-up
  • WBBL 08: 7th place
  • WBBL 09: 8th place
  • WBBL 10: Champions
  • WBBL 11: 5th place

He is currently serving as assistant coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, working alongside head coach Daniel Vettori and captain Pat Cummins.

Tribute from Management

Renegades general manager James Rosengarten praised Helmot’s contribution, stating that he elevated the club to new heights and left a lasting impact both on and off the field. He added that Helmot’s relationships with players, staff and fans would be remembered fondly.

Helmot’s departure adds to the growing list of coaching vacancies in the Big Bash League, with teams like Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers also in search of new head coaches.
