Historic first as Congress MLA takes charge of opposition bench
Guwahati, 27 May (H.S.): Senior Congress MLA Wajed Ali Choudhury was on Wednesday appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, marking a significant political development in the state.

The opposition alliance formally announced Choudhury’s appointment ahead of the upcoming Assembly proceedings. His elevation is being viewed as a major moment in Assam’s legislative history, as he becomes the first legislator from the Miya Muslim community to hold the post of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

The decision comes amid ongoing political realignments and preparations for key debates expected during the Assembly session.
Along with Choudhury’s appointment, senior legislator Dr. Jayaprakash Das has been named Deputy Leader of the Opposition. The opposition camp said the appointments were aimed at strengthening coordination among alliance parties and ensuring an effective challenge to the ruling BJP-led government inside the House.
Political observers believe the move could have wider implications for Congress strategy in Assam, particularly in constituencies with significant minority representation.
The announcement has already triggered political discussions across the state, with parties closely watching how the revamped opposition leadership approaches major legislative and political issues in the coming months.
