Pawan Khera claims large-scale irregularities in voter lists across multiple states

New Delhi, 06 May (H.S.): The Congress party on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining the democratic process and “stealing the people’s mandate” through alleged manipulation of electoral systems.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Congress Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera alleged that the BJP has engaged in large-scale irregularities in voter lists, particularly in states like Assam and West Bengal.

Khera claimed that during the special revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal, nearly 91 lakh names were removed, while around 27 lakh individuals were allegedly not given an opportunity to be heard. He further stated that in several constituencies, the number of deleted voters exceeded the victory margins.

Calling it a “planned electoral strategy,” Khera alleged that similar practices have been adopted in other states including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and even during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Citing specific examples, he said that in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency, 6,018 applications led to voter deletions, out of which only 24 were found to be genuine. In Haryana, he alleged that a single woman’s photograph was used 223 times across different polling booths.

He also pointed to Maharashtra, where he claimed that around 40 lakh new voters were added within five months, compared to 32 lakh additions over a five-year period between 2019 and 2024. He further questioned the sudden rise in voter turnout figures.

Khera alleged that such practices are part of a broader attempt to weaken opposition parties through the use of central agencies, fabricated cases, and manipulation of electoral rolls.

Political Allegations

The BJP has not yet officially responded to the allegations. Meanwhile, the Congress reiterated its demand for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, stressing the need to safeguard democratic institutions.
