Fresh FIRs and Reinvestigation Underway

A senior CID officer said on Monday that the agency is proceeding with legal action based on complaints received in relation to incidents of violence reported after the Assembly election results in 2021.

Officials confirmed that 59 cases, which had earlier been closed after submission of final reports, have now been reopened for further investigation.

According to the CID, these cases are being re-examined as part of an ongoing review process.

“So far, 59 such cases have been reopened and fresh investigations have begun. The process is continuing,” the officer said.

Background of the 2021 Post-Poll Violence

The 2021 West Bengal Assembly election was followed by widespread allegations of political violence from multiple districts across the state. Complaints included accusations of physical attacks, intimidation, arson, vandalism and forced displacement of residents.

The incidents sparked intense political debate nationally, with opposition parties accusing ruling party workers of targeting political rivals. The Trinamool Congress had denied several allegations and maintained that law enforcement agencies were handling complaints as per legal procedures.

Over the years, multiple petitions and demands for investigation into the violence have continued in courts and political forums.

Government’s Recent Stand

The latest CID action comes shortly after statements made in the West Bengal Assembly regarding the scale of post-poll violence cases.

Earlier this week, Suvendu Adhikari stated in the Assembly that nearly 12,500 FIRs related to the 2021 post-poll violence had been registered across the state.

He also announced that all such cases would undergo reinvestigation and that legal action would be taken against those found responsible.

Why the Investigation Matters

The reopening of cases is likely to have political and legal implications in West Bengal, where post-poll violence remains a deeply contested issue.

Fresh investigations could impact victims seeking justice, individuals previously named in complaints, and broader discussions around political accountability and law and order in the state.

Legal experts note that reopening closed cases generally indicates that investigators believe additional evidence, procedural review or further examination may be necessary.

What Happens Next

CID officials said investigations are ongoing and more FIRs or reopened cases may follow as authorities continue to review complaints and previous case records.

The agency is expected to conduct further questioning, evidence collection and district-level inquiries in the coming weeks.
