BGB deploys 20 platoons across key locations as traditional festivities conclude without incident

Dhaka, April 14: Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka marked Pohela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, with peaceful celebrations on Tuesday, supported by extensive security arrangements that included the deployment of 20 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The heightened security presence was aimed at ensuring smooth conduct of large public gatherings during one of the country’s most significant cultural festivals.

BGB personnel were stationed at major points across the city, including Ramna Batamul, Shahbagh, Kakrail, Moghbazar, InterContinental Dhaka, and the Bangladesh National Museum. The deployment was part of coordinated efforts to maintain law and order during the celebrations.

Baishakhi Shobhajatra Draws Wide Participation
A key highlight of the celebrations, the Baishakhi Shobhajatra, was organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University. The procession began in the morning and concluded without any untoward incidents.
Participants from diverse backgrounds joined the event, which featured traditional art forms such as scroll paintings and decorative motifs reflecting Bengali culture.
The procession has been recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, underscoring its cultural significance.

In his message on the occasion, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman described Pohela Baishakh as a symbol of the country’s history, identity, and cultural heritage.
He called on citizens to embrace the spirit of renewal associated with the New Year and work towards collective welfare, setting aside narrow divisions.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of traditional fairs, processions, and Haatkhata (account book) ceremonies in strengthening social unity and reflecting the diversity of Bangladeshi society.
