Administrative reshuffle continues as poll body stresses impartial law enforcement in Murshidabad

Kolkata, April 15: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has removed the Inspector In-Charge (IC) of Beldanga police station in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district as part of ongoing administrative changes ahead of the Assembly elections.
Animesh Dey, who had been serving in the role for a considerable period, has been replaced by Ashutosh Rai, an Inspector from the Howrah Police Commissionerate. Officials said Rai has been instructed to take charge by Wednesday night.
Continued Administrative Reshuffle
The move follows a similar action taken on April 11, when the ECI removed Beldanga’s Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Uttam Garai. Anandjit Horke has since been appointed to the position.
Such reshuffles are part of the Commission’s broader effort to ensure neutrality and prevent any potential bias in law enforcement during the election process.
Focus on Law and Order
Murshidabad district has been under increased scrutiny in recent months, particularly following tensions earlier this year linked to the death of a migrant worker in Beldanga.
The case is currently being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following directions from the Supreme Court. The incident had raised concerns about the handling of the situation by local authorities.
ECI’s Measures for Free and Fair Polls
The Election Commission has been actively transferring and reassigning officials across West Bengal since the announcement of the Assembly election schedule. It has reiterated that officers removed from their posts will not be assigned election-related responsibilities for the time being.
These measures are aimed at ensuring a level playing field and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.
Poll Schedule
The 294-member West Bengal Assembly will go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Murshidabad district is scheduled to vote in the first phase.
The counting of votes will take place on May 4.
Public Impact
Frequent administrative changes ahead of elections are intended to strengthen oversight and reduce the risk of local influence on polling. For voters, such measures are aimed at ensuring a transparent and fair electoral environment.
Conclusion
With the latest reshuffle in Beldanga, the Election Commission continues its efforts to tighten administrative control and maintain neutrality in the run-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections. (With inputs from H.S.)
