Union Minister highlights role of science, innovation and indigenous technology on National Technology Day

New Delhi, 11 May (H.S.): Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh on Monday expressed confidence that India’s national research institutes will play a decisive role in transforming the country into a “global technology leader.”

Speaking on the occasion of National Technology Day, Dr Singh highlighted the growing contribution of public-sector scientific institutions in shaping India’s future through cutting-edge innovation and research.

In a video message shared on social media platform X, the minister said the ‘Vigyan–Tech’ (Science–Technology) programme would emerge as an ideal model for collaborative and future-oriented research and innovation.

He stated that the initiative demonstrates how public research can move beyond laboratories to create meaningful and positive real-world impact.

Dr Singh noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s technological reputation on the global stage has steadily strengthened over the years. He said the country is rapidly setting new benchmarks in science and technology, ranging from genetic research to advanced space exploration.

The minister emphasized that technology is no longer confined to research laboratories and is now directly improving the lives of ordinary citizens.

He cited examples such as robotic systems for deep-sea exploration, tsunami early-warning systems and advanced disaster-management technologies, which are helping make India safer and more resilient.

Highlighting developments in biotechnology, clean energy and agriculture, Dr Singh said innovations such as bio-fortified crops are contributing to food security, environmental sustainability and improved public health.

“These innovations are central to India’s self-reliance and long-term development vision,” he said.

The Union Minister further explained that the ‘Vigyan-Tech’ programme, organised by the Department of Biotechnology, is a major attraction of this year’s National Technology Day celebrations.

According to him, the event will bring together 14 ministries and departments on a single platform to showcase indigenous technologies developed by their respective research institutions.

The programme will also present successful lab-to-market innovation stories and highlight the growing collaboration between academia, industry and government institutions.

Dr Singh said the initiative marks a concrete step towards positioning India not merely as a consumer of technology, but as a creator and global driver of innovation.

On the occasion, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju also described 11 May as a historic day for India, recalling the Pokhran nuclear tests conducted in 1998 under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Rijiju said the tests established India as a confident and self-reliant nation and reinforced the importance of scientific strength in national development.

He paid tribute to scientists, engineers and innovators across the country, stating that their continued efforts are strengthening India’s technological resilience and self-reliance.
