Election Commission seeks report as tensions surface at polling booth; allegations and counter-allegations intensify

Murshidabad, April 23: Tensions escalated in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district during the ongoing Assembly elections after protests broke out against Aamjanata Unnayan Party leader and candidate Humayun Kabir in Naoda on Thursday.
The incident occurred at a polling booth in Shibnagar village, where Kabir had reportedly arrived to monitor voting. According to local accounts, a group of residents gathered at the site and raised slogans against him, including “Go Back” and other accusations questioning his political affiliations.
Situation Turns Volatile
The situation intensified when a confrontation broke out between the candidate and protesters, leading to a brief scuffle. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic atmosphere as tensions rose at the polling location.
Security personnel, including police and central forces deployed for election duty, quickly intervened and brought the situation under control.
Allegations and Counterclaims
Following the incident, Kabir staged a sit-in protest, alleging that the disruption was orchestrated by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to disturb the polling process. He said he would pursue the matter further.
Separately, reports from the Domkal area in the district suggested that some voters, allegedly supporters of Left parties, were prevented from casting their votes. These claims have been directed at the Trinamool Congress.
Election Commission Seeks Report
The Election Commission has taken note of the developments and sought a detailed report on the incidents.
Murshidabad has remained sensitive in the lead-up to polling, with reports of clashes between political workers and isolated incidents of violence. Opposition parties have accused the police of failing to act promptly, while district authorities have denied any lapses.
The developments highlight ongoing concerns over maintaining law and order during the high-stakes Assembly elections in the state.
