French President stresses importance of free maritime navigation and multilateral cooperation

Paris/Tehran, 07 May (H.S.): French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the immediate restoration of free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. Following a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Macron urged all parties to lift the blockade on the crucial maritime route without any preconditions or delay.

Macron stated that the Strait of Hormuz holds immense significance for global trade and energy supplies, emphasizing that uninterrupted maritime movement through the waterway must resume at the earliest.

He further noted that recent developments have highlighted the urgent need for strong multilateral cooperation to maintain regional security and stability.

The French President also referred to a proposed multinational maritime mission jointly put forward by France and the United Kingdom to ensure the safety of the strategic sea route. He appealed to other nations to consider joining the initiative, stressing that collective efforts are essential to de-escalate tensions and restore confidence in the region.

Macron additionally indicated that he intends to discuss the matter with former US President Donald Trump.

During the conversation, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly reiterated Tehran’s deep mistrust of the United States, maintaining that external powers have played a major role in escalating regional tensions. The Iranian side asserted that any long-term solution must be based on mutual respect and trust.

The Strait of Hormuz has witnessed increased military activity and several disruptions to maritime traffic in recent months, raising concerns in global energy and financial markets. In response, diplomatic engagements at the international level have intensified, with several countries seeking a peaceful resolution to safeguard one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
