Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls See Steady Turnout, 37.56% Voting Recorded by 11 AM

Peaceful polling reported across 234 constituencies as voters turn out in large numbers

Chennai, April 23: Tamil Nadu recorded a steady voter turnout of 37.56% by 11 a.m. on Thursday as polling continued across all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state.

Long queues were seen at several polling stations since early morning, indicating strong public participation in what is being viewed as a crucial electoral contest. Over 5.73 crore eligible voters are expected to decide the outcome, with 4,023 candidates in the fray.

Key Electoral Contest

The main contest is between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Other parties, including Naam Tamilar Katchi and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, have also added to the competitive landscape.

Peaceful Polling and Security Measures

Election Commission officials said polling has remained largely peaceful so far, supported by extensive security arrangements and close monitoring across districts.

Authorities expect voter turnout to rise further as the day progresses.

Leaders and Public Figures Cast Votes

Several prominent leaders and public figures exercised their franchise during the day. Thol. Thirumavalavan voted at a government school in Anganur in Ariyalur district’s Kunnam constituency.

AIPTMMK founder V.K. Sasikala cast her vote at Stella Maris College in Chennai and urged citizens to participate actively, calling elections a “festival of democracy.”

Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan voted at a corporation school in Alwarpet, while VCK MP D. Ravikumar cast his vote in the Vanur constituency.

Actor Trisha Krishnan also voted in Chennai and appealed to the public to take part in the democratic process.

What Lies Ahead

Polling will continue until the evening, with officials anticipating a higher turnout by the end of the day. The election outcome is expected to play a significant role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in the coming years.
