Strong performance in Malappuram boosts alliance; CM Pinarayi Vijayan trails in Dharmadam

Malappuram, May 4 (H.S.): The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has emerged as a key force behind the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) strong showing in the ongoing counting of votes for the Kerala Assembly elections, leading in 23 constituencies across the state.

The party’s performance has significantly strengthened the UDF’s momentum, particularly in northern Kerala. In Malappuram district, the IUML appears to be maintaining its traditional dominance, with several of its candidates leading comfortably in their respective constituencies.

Strong Leads Across Constituencies

In Kondotty, the IUML candidate, after briefly trailing in the initial rounds, staged a comeback and regained the lead. In Perambra, IUML candidate Fathima Thahaliya has taken a clear lead over LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan and has maintained her advantage through successive rounds of counting.

Statewide trends indicate that the Congress, the principal party in the UDF alliance, is leading in 58 seats, further reinforcing the opposition’s upward trajectory.

LDF Trails, Key Leaders Under Pressure

In contrast, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is trailing, with the CPI(M) leading in 30 seats and the CPI ahead in 10 seats. Among other parties, the Kerala Congress (Joseph faction) is leading in seven seats, while the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) is ahead in three constituencies. The Kerala Congress (Mani faction) has secured a lead in just one seat so far.

In a significant development, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is trailing after the fifth round of counting in his Dharmadam constituency, where Congress candidate V.P. Abdul Rasheed has taken the lead, indicating a potential upset.

With counting still underway, the IUML’s strong performance has placed the UDF in a commanding position, though the final outcome will depend on trends in the remaining rounds.
